Mi compañeros

I'm totally bored and not able to sleep so I'm gonna blog about my roommates since I really haven't done it yet. I live with two guys, Iñaki and Xalba. They're both from Pais Basco (the Basque Country), which is in the North of Spain. You can tell by their names that they are Bascos. Iñaki is the nickname for Ignacio (in other parts of Spain he would be called Nacho), and Xalba is short for Xalbador (you will see the letter X a lot in the Basque language). Of course, I didn't know this until I moved in.

Another thing I learned after I moved in was the fact that they are both my age. Both are about a month older than me. Age wasn't really an important factor when I was looking for an apartment (well, they had to be between 25 and 35 which I think is pretty flexible), but I think it worked out well that I live with people my age. I feel that we get along better. They are neither big party-ers nor are they homebodies. They are responsible, yet they know how to have fun on the weekends. It was just what I needed in roommates.

One is an engineer for IBM and one does freelance economic research and analysis. I'm pretty much the bum in la casa...hahaha. They have both been friends for many years so they hang out together all the time, which is very cute. They're pretty much like brothers. On weekends, like the annoying kid sister, I usually tag along with them when they go to a bar/disco. When we go out on Saturdays, we usually just chill for a few hours and head out to the bars at about 1. We do some pre-drinking with rum and coca cola, munch on some patatas fritas (potato chips), and watch futbol on TV. The best part about them is that they both dance so it works out perfectly...you know how much I love to dance!

Both are also huge futbol fans. They play for a local league and they play with other local teams on Saturday nights (which I finally got to see...check my next post). On Wednesdays, they practice with their team at 10 PM! I always tell them they are crazy...I'm all ready for bed by that time and they're just getting ready to play. On weekends, there are 10 Liga (The Spanish futbol league) matches. So every week, they play the Quiniela, which is pretty much betting on who wins, loses and draws. It cost about 50 cents to play, and you can win millions of Euros. You have to predict all 10 matches correctly, so it's very difficult to win. Iñaki made me choose two of the matches one week, which was probably the worst idea since I have the worst luck. And of course, as I expected, we had to go to work that next Monday. There's one game on TV on Saturday nights, which we watch before going out. On Sundays, we usually have to watch the matches online, which is always blurry or on delay. You have to have cable in order to see SOME of the matches, or pay extra for the big games; obviously, futbol is big business here. On the coffee table, there is a book they call the "bible". It is basically all the information you need to know about the current futbol season. I think I've looked at the "bible" more than I've looked at my Spanish book...hahaha.

So far, I've enjoyed living with my roommates. I've never really lived with guys before - with the exception of my dad and my brothers, which doesn't count because they are family; and Juan, which also doesn't count because it was only temporary. And after a month, I'm getting used to it. There's definitely less drama...probably because there's not much estrogen in the house (hahaha sorry girls. I love you but you know us women always have drama!). It's has been a big adjustment for me, but so far it hasn't been so bad. Sometimes I find myself over-analyzing everything like, "oh crap, are they annoyed with me for doing this or that?" And then I realize later that they don't care. If they do, they would tell me. Things are pretty straightforward. No need for random notes about cleaning the bathroom, like we use to do on 1236 (hahaha remember those girls?).

Anyway, linked to this post are pictures of my apartment. It's like a virtual tour except they are still pictures. Make sure to check out the view from the balcony. The building is situated halfway up a hill, so the view is great! There's a beautiful basilica directly behind us, and the Palacio Real (the Royal Palace) is not too far away. Also check out the picture of my key (which you should see below). It's the best key ever! As Andrew says, it's looks like a key to my chastity belt....hahahaha!
